Dental Implants:

Overview of Dental Implants: Dental implants look exactly like regular teeth or teeth.  They are made from zircon and titanium, and are also custom made to suit the patient’s needs. Endosteal, or in the bone, and subperiosteal, or on the bone, are the two most common types of dental implants.

Parts Of A Dental Implant

Different implants have different shapes and sizes according to patients’ needs, such as external or internal octagons, hexagons, mini, wide, or standard. Dental implants consist of three main parts including a small titanium screw. In addition, dental implants are a versatile solution that replaces missing or lost teeth and act as a false root or anchor made of titanium.

Dental Implant Procedure

It takes 90 to 120 days, including healing time, for the implant to fuse with the bone. In a dental implant procedure, there are two important stages.  The first stage of dental implant surgery involves the dentist inserting a metal screw into the jaw bone. It is hidden inside the jaw bone’s bone structure, and therefore cannot be seen. The abutment on the screw will be visible. If the dentist can see the abutment when the patient laughs or smiles, he would place a temporary cover over the abutment.

In the second stage, the implant restoration takes place after the implant is firmly anchored in the jaw bone. An abutment would be covered by a crown that would match the shade of the adjoining teeth.

You can also use an implant to support a bridge or crown, or a set of dentures. Sometimes, a patient may not have sufficient bone in their jaw due to resorption, which is necessary to support an implant. By utilizing the latest technology and innovation, dentists are able to develop and implant man-made bone for successful implantation of these devices. Therefore, a person who wears a denture is a good candidate because dental implants are a solid foundation and avoids further bone loss.

Dental Implants Are Not Suitable For:

Dental implants are not always suitable for patients due to certain conditions that make them unsuitable. Several factors contribute to the development of dental disease. These include smoking, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, chronic bruxism, or grinding of the teeth, and poor oral hygiene.

Improve Your Smile And Self-Confidence

By replacing missing teeth with dental implants, you will be able to improve your smile and self-confidence. For patients who have lost just a few teeth, the benefits of regaining their original shape include restoring their mouths to their previous appearance. X-rays, castings, measurements, and a thorough examination are necessary for a dentist to determine whether a patient needs dental implants.

Finally, even though there are several options for tooth replacement, dental implants have certain advantages over crowns, bridges and removable dentures.
